About Us

Founded in Brisbane by Jo Brooks, SOS Dogs is on a mission to create a world full of balanced, happy, social dogs. In order to do this, we need to educate and train humans!

The SOS Dogs

MISSION

We believe there’s almost nothing better than forming a deep bond with a dog, and we want to help make that happen for you.

So often, it is us humans who inadvertently cause the undesirable behaviour in our dogs, simply because we don’t speak their language.

Our training focuses on helping you communicate with your dog in a way they can understand. Our methods are science based and behaviourist-lead, backed by years of training and global experience.

The SOS Dogs

METHOD

We believe in taking a balanced approach to dog training. Simply put, balanced dog training means a mix of positive reinforcement and negative correction. There is a lot of noise out there about what these terms mean, but at SOS Dogs it means this:

  • We positively reinforce desired behaviours – e.g. praising a puppy for toileting in the right spot.
  • We remove the reinforcers for inappropriate behaviours – e.g. no patting or treating the dog during inappropriate behaviour like jumping, whining etc.
  • We use positive punishment to stop inappropriate behaviours – e.g. putting a knee up into a dog’s chest if they jump, or block them with a hand.
  • We address the emotional state and environmental conditions that drive the behaviour – e.g. how the household runs and what the routine and structure is for the dog.

We do not use e-collars, pinch collars, prong collars, shock collars. If not used correctly these tools can be detrimental to the dogs behaviour. We believe these can also be more complicated for families to use, so we try and achieve the desired behaviour without the use of these tools.

If your dog is unpredictable around other dogs or humans, is over-excited or anxious, aggressive or just plain naughty, it can be exhausting, overwhelming – even isolating.

You are not alone – the Merck Veterinary Manual has documented that aggression-related problems alone account for 70% of dog consultations. If your dog is contributing to those statistics, we can help. No matter how young or old your dog is, they can always be helped – it’s never too late!
